How to Request a School Evaluation
If you suspect your child needs special education services, you have the right to request an evaluation from your school district. Write a letter addressed to the Director of Special Education in your district. Include your child's full name, date of birth, your contact information, a clear statement that you are requesting a comprehensive evaluation for special education services, and any specific concerns (e.g., behavior, communication, social skills). Mention that you are requesting an evaluation under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Keep a copy for your records and send the letter by certified mail or hand deliver with a date stamp. The district must respond within a set timeline (usually 20 days) to either agree or explain why they are not evaluating. You can also request an IEP meeting to discuss the evaluation results.

If your child is receiving clinical ABA outside of school, ask how the school can coordinate with your BCBA (with your written consent). Remember, the school is not required to provide clinical ABA therapy, but they can support behavioral goals within the school day.
